Toyota works Motor Corp. say’s it aims to develop a more advanced electric car battery “in a next few years” that will allow the Japanese automaker to build vehicles with up to 15% ( percent ) greater range and life of the Battery they currently have.

Improving the performance of lithium ion battery technology is an urgent problem for traditional car manufacturers such as Toyota works and newcomers such as Tesla Motors Inc. due to its limiting features.

Manufacturers of electric all-electric, plug-in hybrid electric cars, as well as traditional hybrid gas-electric hybrids all strive to find or develop more advanced battery technologies to improve range, battery life and safety .

Toyota, Japan’s largest automaker in volume, was the pioneer of hybrid gasoline-electric technology and is preparing to launch a new almost electric plug-in, the Prius Prime. It also aims to offer a fully electric electric car by 2020.

Using techniques developed in collaboration with a Japanese publicly funded laboratory and four universities in Japan, Toyota engineers were able to better see in real time how lithium ions move inside the electrodes, Yamashige said.

This should lead to new designs that prevent lithium ions from moving unevenly and clustering in the electrodes, something that currently limits the life of the battery and range of vehicles and can be a factor of overheating, he said.
